Redwood trees in California have long fallen victim to logging and fast-paced development. Many ancient coast redwood forests have been lost since 1850. The Save the Redwoods League built a GIS-based conservation model, then used Esri's ArcGIS software to analyze data and map detailed conservation strategies for these ancient, majestic trees. GIS helps the league's staff identify parcels of land it should consider purchasing, thereby protecting the redwoods for future generations to see and enjoy. Read the article.

The Esri Nonprofit Organization Program, announced last month by company president Jack Dangermond, will provide conservation and humanitarian nonprofit organizations around the world an affordable way of acquiring ArcGIS software and services. Other types of nonprofit organizations may also be eligible. The program is intended to make it easier and more affordable for qualified nonprofits to incorporate spatial analysis, mapping, and geographic data management into their local and global projects.
